Most Cost Ricans (Ticos) pronounce her name in the Spanish way "Maa dee," and regard her with great respect and affection. She has been dubbed "the happiest woman in Costa Rica" and her "sesenta y cinco cumpleaņos" fiesta was a party that will be remembered for a while.

Our daughter, Jonna, and granddaughter, Mica, arrived on the 31st of May and while we would have liked to made their arrival a surprise it was just too complicated to pull off.

But the next day, Sunday June 1st, actually the day after her birthday, we had plenty of other surprises for her. Nearly everyone showed up (over 40) and Bob and Patsy hosted the party at their finca. Bob cooked hamburgers and hot dogs, Patsy organized the party and Calle made the cake.

The party started at one pm and at three we had the first surprise for Mary. I hired a local Spanish guitar trio and they entered playing Mary's favorite song, "Cuando, Cuando, Cuando." When we talked to them prior to the party they told us they didn't know the song, but Rodolfo looked it up on the net and they learned it just for Mary.

Soon after the arrival of the music Patsy brought out a traditional Spanish Piņata filled with candy and Mary had a great time beating it to pieces with a stick. Soon candy was spilled all over the floor and we all sang Happy Birthday in English and Spanish.

We escaped the Piņata with no injuries and then I was honored with the first dance with Mary as the band played "Besame Mucho," I did and we all danced, ate cake, gabbed and celebrated my wife Mary's birthday
